Turning stills into moving images

In my Film 116 class we were given the task of going on an exploratory trek and capturing images with a 4mp point and shoot camera. The camera also had video capabilities. Knowing the limitations of the technology we had to propose an image gathering strategy and then go and complete the task. Once we had all of our images we put together 5 "best of" clips and created .mov files from them.

For the first movie I am sharing I used Snap 'N Drag freeware to capture different portions of one still image of a leaf taken no further away than 8" from it and saved the screen captures as sequence files. Then in QuickTime Pro I opened the image sequence and manipulated the repeats, patterns, and overall rythm and look of the short movie.

The second movie used the same close-up strategy, but this time I used multiple stills and manipulated the direction of the photo through rotation as well as grabbing a small portion of an image and in a 3 shot screen capture process gradually included the whole image. These two distinct editing tactics create an interesting visual effect.

I hope you enjoyed these presentations of using still photography to make a movie.
