Turning stills into moving images

In my Film 116 class we were given the task of going on an exploratory trek and capturing images with a 4mp point and shoot camera. The camera also had video capabilities. Knowing the limitations of the technology we had to propose an image gathering strategy and then go and complete the task. Once we had all of our images we put together 5 "best of" clips and created .mov files from them.

For the first movie I am sharing I used Snap 'N Drag freeware to capture different portions of one still image of a leaf taken no further away than 8" from it and saved the screen captures as sequence files. Then in QuickTime Pro I opened the image sequence and manipulated the repeats, patterns, and overall rythm and look of the short movie.

The second movie used the same close-up strategy, but this time I used multiple stills and manipulated the direction of the photo through rotation as well as grabbing a small portion of an image and in a 3 shot screen capture process gradually included the whole image. These two distinct editing tactics create an interesting visual effect.

I hope you enjoyed these presentations of using still photography to make a movie.

Collage/Photomontage

Hanna Hoch

The assignment is to make collages digitally - no glue, no exacto knife. The challenge is to make them interesting - I am sure you are up to the challenge. You may use text, found images, old images, new images. On Tuesday I will show many examples from the early 2oth century to contemporary uses of the form. I want you to make five. They will be due Tuesday March, 27.

Children of Men

I hope everyone here has seen Children of Men. When I saw it, I noticed that a lot of the shots had a very photographic quality.

Set in the United Kingdom of 2027, in a dystopian future where two decades of sterility have left the population with less than a century to survive, the resulting societal collapse leads to terrorism, environmental destruction, and millions of refugees. Civil servant Theo Faron must help a pregnant West African refugee named Kee, escape Britain's oppressive new immigration laws and rendezvous with the Human Project, the last hope for humanity.

There were a couple very powerful images in the film, including a visual homage to a Pink Floyd Album as well as the Abu Gharib photographs.
